Trinity Catholic hasn't had much luck against Montverde Academy recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. Not much got past Caylee Barbe, who gave up just six hits and racked up 11 Ks to keep Melbourne Central Catholic off the board. Barbe has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Trinity Catholic saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Julianna Ortega, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, Montverde Academy made easy work of Cornerstone Charter Academy on Tuesday and carried off a 10-4 victory. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 19 contests by six runs or more this season.
La'Breah Sands made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single hit and allowing only two earned runs while striking out six over four innings pitched. Sands was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Elena Friedman was a standout: she went a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles, one stolen base, and one run. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March. Audrey Vivino was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Montverde Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .543. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .543 or higher in five consecutive matches.
Montverde Academy's win was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 27-2. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Trinity Catholic, their record is now 21-8.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Trinity Catholic hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.6 home runs per game. However, it's not like Montverde Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.8 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
