After a string of three wins, the Benson Bobcats's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. Their rough 57-36 defeat to Douglas might stick with them for a while. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Benson in their matchups with Douglas: they've now lost four in a row.
Despite the loss, Benson still got an impressive performance from Jamey Darwin, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 13 rebounds. The game was Darwin's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Kaylei Taylor, who scored nine points along with nine rebounds and four steals.
Even though they lost, Benson were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Douglas only pulled down six offensive rebounds.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Douglas to victory, but perhaps none more so than Francia Rubio, who scored six points along with 11 assists and eight steals. Rubio is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Dana Pena, who scored 13 points along with three steals.
Benson's loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-4. As for Douglas, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 12-2 record this season.
Benson will head out on the road to face off against Morenci at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Morenci focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 on Tuesday. Douglas will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Peoria at 1:30 p.m. on December 28th.
