University is 0-3 against Belton since August of 2014 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The University Trojans will head out on the road to face off against the Belton Tigers at 7:00 p.m. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
University had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 41-23 victory over Pflugerville Connally.
University got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was LaDarrius Evans out in front who rushed for 141 yards and a touchdown while picking up 8.8 yards per carry. London Smith was in the mix too, providing University with two touchdowns.
University's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB three times. Leading the way was Edgar Marquez and his two sacks.
Meanwhile, Belton didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Chaparral on Friday, but they still walked away with a 20-14 victory. Given Belton's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 221st, while Chaparral is ranked 594th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Reese Rumfield was his usual excellent self, throwing for 171 yards and three touchdowns on only 15 passes.
University's victory was their fifth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 7-2. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 32.8 points per game. As for Belton, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-1.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's match: University has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 267.1 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Belton struggles in that department as they've been averaging 175.7 per game. It's looking like Friday's game might have some serious battles in the trenches.
University couldn't quite finish off Belton in their previous matchup back in November of 2022 and fell 31-29. Can University avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
