Two dominant backs in Kreyton Wiese and Tyson Sullivan are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Wauneta-Palisade Broncos will be playing in front of their home fans against the Wallace Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Wauneta-Palisade has given up an average of 31.3 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Wauneta-Palisade had been on a five-game streak of scoring at least 31 points, but Southwest put an end to it on Friday. The Broncos were outmatched by the Roughriders and fell 55-12. The matchup marked the Broncos' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Although Wauneta-Palisade took the loss, they still got scores from Wiese and David Bryner.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Wallace). They really took it to Medicine Valley for the full four quarters, racking up a 70-33 win. With the Wildcats ahead 43-21 at the half, the game was all but over already.
Wallace's win came from a few key players Wauneta-Palisade will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Brayden Gardner, who picked up 52 receiving yards and a pair of TDs, and also rushed for 54 yards and one touchdown. He also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, picking up a sack and making ten total tackles (2.0 for loss). Another player making a difference was Ashtin Johns, who rushed for 90 yards and a pair of scores.
Wallace was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 399 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 172 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.
Wallace's defensive line made their presence known, laying out the QB three times. The team can thank two different players for their defensive prowess: Gardner and Sullivan, who each picked up one sack apiece.
Wallace pushed their record up to 5-1 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.0 points over those games. As for Wauneta-Palisade, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-2.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Wauneta-Palisade has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 286.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Wallace struggles in that department as they've been averaging 328.5 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Everything came up roses for Wauneta-Palisade against Wallace when the teams last played back in October of 2024, as the team secured a 49-22 victory. Will the Broncos repeat their success, or do the Wildcats have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
