The Nogales Apaches can finally bid farewell to their five-game losing streak thanks to their game on Wednesday. They really took it to Desert View for the full four quarters, racking up a 66-35 win on the road. The win was just what Nogales needed coming off of a 73-46 loss in their prior match.
Diego Ortega continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 22 points along with three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Tony Rodriguez, who scored nine points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Desert View lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Gilbert Herran, who scored five points along with six rebounds and two steals. Another player making a difference was Luis Felix, who scored a point along with ten rebounds.
Even though they lost, Desert View smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Nogales only pulled down eight offensive rebounds.
The victory got Nogales back to even at 9-9. As for Desert View, they dropped their record down to 1-20 with that defeat, which was their 17th straight at home dating back to last season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Nogales won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Salpointe Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on January 25th. Salpointe Catholic presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Nogales in Arizona (Salpointe Catholic is ranked 46th, while Nogales is ranked 142nd). As for Desert View, they will head out on the road to take on Nogales at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Nogales focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 on Thursday.
