Newbury Park found their leader in sophomore Darrien Johnson, who rushed for 111 yards and four touchdowns on only ten carries, and also threw for 136 yards and one TD while completing 76.9% of his passes. Johnson's longest rush was for an impressive 52 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Vincent Carner did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 93 receiving yards.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Newbury Park proved: they limited Rio Mesa to a paltry -0.7 yards per carry. The team can thank Balen Betancourt for the heroic effort on defense: he. Newbury Park's run defense has been on the up-and-up: they allowed five yards per carry earlier this season, but they've only allowed 4.43 on average over their last three games.
