Nixon-Smiley is 1-6 against Cole since December of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs will be playing at home against the Cole Cougars at 6:15 p.m. Nixon-Smiley will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings (they are ranked 1211th, while Cole is ranked 370th).
Nixon-Smiley suffered their closest defeat yet this season on Friday. They fell just short of Marion by a score of 45-43. Nixon-Smiley has struggled against Marion recently, as their game on Friday was their third consecutive lost matchup.
Despite the defeat, Nixon-Smiley got a solid performance out of Janaelyn White, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten steals. White has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last six times she's played. Kendall Amaya was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with two steals.
Even though they lost, Nixon-Smiley smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. This was only their 15th loss (out of 21 games) when they hit their own glass that hard.
Meanwhile, Cole stacked a ninth blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Friday. They blew past Luling 58-29 at home. Winning may never get old, but Cole sure is getting used to it with their fourth in a row.
Nixon-Smiley has been struggling recently, as they've lost nine of their last ten matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-21 record this season. As for Cole, they pushed their record up to 22-8 with that win, which was their third straight at home.
Nixon-Smiley took a serious blow against Cole in their previous meeting back in January of 2023, falling 65-30. The matchup was all but decided by halftime, at which point Nixon-Smiley was down 38-13.
