Wellsville is 6-1 against Haverling since May of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Lions will face off against the Rams at 5:30 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Wellsville comes in on ten and Haverling on 13.
Wellsville proved they can win big on Tuesday (they won by seven) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out Avon 2-1. Those two runs were actually the fewest the Lions have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.
Makenna Dunbar spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Wellsville saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kennedy Perry, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI. Lindsay Stuck also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, Haverling's rock-solid pitcher showed up for the team's third consecutive shutout on Thursday. Everything went their way against Waterloo as they made off with an 18-0 victory. The Rams might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 13 matches by six runs or more this season.
Haverling got a massive performance out of Caydence Spears, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs, three RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was Lane Prescott, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs.
Haverling always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .706. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Wellsville pushed their record up to 18-2 with the win, which was their 23rd straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games. As for Haverling, their record now sits at 17-3.
Saturday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Wellsville hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .359. However, it's not like Haverling struggles in that department as they've averaged .392. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Wellsville beat Haverling 4-0 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Do the Lions have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Rams turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
