Taylorville had won three straight on the road, but on Monday they bumped their record up to 11-6 to make it four. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Springfield Southeast Spartans, sneaking past 8-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Tornadoes have posted against the Spartans since April 10, 2015.
Kason Pembroke was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Maxx Grieme, who got on base in five of his six plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Colton Gatton was another key player, getting on base in four of his six plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs.
As for Springfield Southeast, their loss dropped their record down to 7-15. They haven't had much luck with Taylorville recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
Like Taylorville, Springfield Southeast also got a great game from a two-way player: T Herrington. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over 4.2 innings pitched. Herrington was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Springfield Southeast: the team is 5-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 2-13 otherwise.
In other batting news, E Murphy was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one double and one RBI. A Dunphy also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.
Looking ahead, Taylorville will welcome Williamsville at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Springfield Southeast, they will head out to face off against Glenwood at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Titans will roll in looking for their fifth straight win, something the Spartans surely won't give up without a fight.
