The Big Sandy Wildcats will square off against the Hawkins Hawks at 1:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
Big Sandy took a loss when they played away from home on Saturday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. Everything went their way against Cumby as Big Sandy made off with a 13-3 win. The Wildcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three contests by ten runs or more this season.
The team relied heavily on Journie Plunkett, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three doubles. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Jorga Stewart, who went 3-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Big Sandy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .618. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cumby only posted an OBP of .458.
Meanwhile, Hawkins made easy work of Grace Community on Friday and carried off a 9-3 victory. The Hawks haven't had any issues with the Cougars recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Kalyn Ellison spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three runs (all of which were unearned) on five hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, Hawkins let Alana Gipson and Taetum Smith run wild. Gipson scored a run and stole Three bases. while going 3-for-3, while Smith scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Londyn Wilson, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.
Big Sandy pushed their record up to 3-3 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 9 runs. As for Hawkins, their win bumped their record up to 6-7-1.
Hawkins' pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Big Sandy has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .615. It's a different story for Hawkins, though, as they've only averaged .359. Will they be able to contain Big Sandy's hitters?
Big Sandy might still be hurting after the 10-0 loss they got from Hawkins in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Will Big Sandy have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other softball content.
