Buford scored on its first two possessions and the defense did the rest as Georgia increased its series edge against Florida to 62-33-3 since games played in 2003. Trinity Christian came in with six blue chip recruits and 13 starters back from a state championship team.
According to
gwinnettdailypost.com,
Luke Humphrey completed a 24-yard touchdown pass to
Isaac Nauta on the game's first possession and then Buford took advantage of a turnover to drive just 12 yards in three plays capped by a 1-yard scoring run by
Joshua Thomas.
Buford, which returned 11 starters from a 15-0 team that won its ninth state title since 2001, gave up just 56 yards to win its 16th-straight season opener. It was also Buford's 29th-straight overall.
"That was a physical, tough game," Buford head coach Jess Simpson told the newspaper. "Our kids were hungry and they knew they had a huge challenge in front of them."
