2025 Team Previews1. Hamilton suffered just one league loss last year, against Marquette, as the Chargers entered the playoffs 7-2 overall after a second-place finish in the Greater Metro Conference. The team got a tough draw in the playoffs, having to go on the road to Arrowhead in Level 1, falling 29-14 to the Warhawks. The Chargers should be competing for a conference title this year with 31 returning letterwinners, featuring five returning starters on offense and six on defense. All five of the projected starters on the offensive line have started multiple games in the past, including twin juniors Hunter and Reece Mallinger, both developing into standout Division 1 college prospects. Dane Warren provides a strong option at tight end after starting every game there as just a freshman last season. Cole Erdmann and Jacob Osmanski have each gotten varsity reps at quarterback and will battle for the role this fall. Drew Olsson is a returning First Team All-Conference receiver for whoever takes over the quarterback spot. The defensive side of the ball has some strong players, including First Team All-Conference linebacker Xzavier Mielke.
2. Marquette won a Division 1 state title in 2023, but opened last year with a loss to Arrowhead. The Hilltoppers would rebound nicely, winning ten straight games to capture the outright Greater Metro Conference and get to a sectional championship, where, unfortunately, they'd fall to eventual champion Bay Port. Longtime coach Keith Klestinski, who spent many years as an assistant and later as head coach, stepped down in the off-season, and Marquette HS grad Jon Kahle takes over after spending a dozen years at Brookfield Academy. It will be a pretty new group taking the field this fall, with just three starters returning on offense and four on defense. Among the returning regulars is one of the state's top offensive weapons, running back Tommy Novotny. Last year, he scored 24 touchdowns and will be a three-year starter for the Hilltoppers. Marquette will be breaking in a new quarterback and several new linemen this fall. Standouts like Mitchell Nigro, Cole Fischer, and Evan Maier will be tough to replace on the defensive side of the ball, but the program has the depth and history to remain among the upper echelon of the GMC.
3. Germantown opened with impressive wins over Homestead and Hartford in the non-conference and later defeated Muskego in a crossover, and it seemed the Warhawks may push for the top of the Greater Metro. However, they'd fall to Marquette and later Sussex Hamilton, finishing third in the league standings. They defeated Cedarburg to open the playoffs before exiting against Homestead in Level 2. There's a big hole to fill following the graduation of the state's all-time leading tackler and multiple-time All-State linebacker Cooper Catalano, but the team is positioned to push for the top spot this fall. Vinny Inga returns at quarterback after throwing for 1,745 yards and rushing for 1,026 more. Top receivers Christian Griffin, Griffin Stein, and Liam Hagland all return as well. Germantown will be big and talented up front, with junior Cole Reiter developing into one of the top offensive linemen in the country, while classmate Carter Gordon was also a First Team All-Conference pick for the Warhawks. The defense has nice talent returning, including Alex Reinke, Jon Murkowski, J.J. Walters, and Mateusz Pawela.
4. Brookfield Central went 3-6 during the regular season against a challenging schedule, but the Lancers were able to sneak into the playoffs, where they'd fall to eventual champion Slinger in Level 1. "We had a lot of younger players get experience that will come in handy this season," said head coach Joel Norris. "Our quarterback is back and will be the strength of our offense." That quarterback is A.J. Seymour, who threw for 888 yards and also led the team in rushing with 744 in the spread Wing-T attack. Rece Hopfensperger is a talented returning tight end, while Jacob Paradowski, Riley Budde, and Cole Carl are back up front for the Lancers, who return six starters on offense in total, with five back on defense.
5. Brookfield East went 3-6 overall and 2-5 in conference play last year, missing out on the playoffs for a second consecutive season. The Spartans have some pieces to build on this fall as they try to push for a playoff spot and upper division finish in the GMC. Zeke Sawall returns at quarterback, throwing for 1,316 yards and 11 touchdowns a year ago. Leading rusher Max Matter is also back. Top tacklers Jake Snyder and Jack Murray return on defense. Murray is committed to Northern Illinois and doubles as a standout tight end for the Spartans.
6. West Allis Hale opened with a dominating 54-0 win over West Allis Central, but the Huskies would score just one more win the rest of the season, a 28-24 conference victory against Menomonee Falls. The Huskies have to replace starting quarterback Quinn Ustruck, but do return leading rusher Dolce Plain plus experienced receivers Luke Schaning and Jeremiah Morris. It is an interesting schedule for Hale this year, as they have five straight home games to open the season, followed by four consecutive road games to close things out.
7. Menomonee Falls went from a playoff team in 2023 to winless last season, as despite a number of competitive games, the Phoenix couldn't find the left side of the ledger. Alec Johnson and Anishka Amarasinghe each saw time at quarterback as sophomores last season and return this fall, as does leading rusher C.J. Spence and experienced pass-catcher Liam Richardson.
• The GMC is a seven-team league paired with the Classic Eight, and all league teams will play one crossover against the opposing conference.
