5A Front Range recap Sept. 26, 2012
Calvin Johnson of Fort Collins ran for the longest rushing play in 5A Front Range this season against Legacy last week. Johnson scampered for 78 yards on the play and finished with 113 on the day as his team beat the Lightning.
Fort Collins was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in the league. Eric Rice's team vanquished Legacy 17-7 earlier in the week.
Fossil Ridge's dynamic duo of Travis Avila and Corey Peter proved tough for Eaglecrest to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Avila threw for 291 yards and four touchdowns and Peter had 152 yards receiving. Connor Rutledge helped Fossil Ridge's passing attack out by catching five balls for 43 yards.
5-foot-10 quarterback Avila of the Sabercats is the league leader in passing yards this season with 826. He has also thrown six touchdowns. On the ground, Mountain Range's Gabe Gellespie has rushed for 344 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Dustin Rivas. The Horizon star has 20 catches for 507 yards.
The top two teams in 5A Front Range will face off this week when first place Mountain Range takes on second place Horizon. The Mustangs fell to Grand Junction last week, while Horizon lost to Columbine.
There should be lots of points scored when Mountain Range and the Hawks face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Bryan Davey's team comes in having scored 148 this season, while Horizon has scored 88. The Mustangs scored 14 points last week as they fell to the Tigers.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Mountain Range takes on Frank Ybarra's team. The Mustangs have allowed 64 points this season, while the Hawks have given up 97. Mountain Range allowed 28 points last week as it lost to Grand Junction.
The Mustangs were able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after beating the Mustangs 28-14. Mountain Range came in at 23 in the state poll after placing at number 31 last week.
