Rowlett (Texas) superstar Marquise Goodwin erased a 20-year-old national long jump record when he soared 26 feet, 10 inches during the USA Track & Field Junior National Championships in Eugene, Ore. The previous standard was 26-9.25 by Dion Bentley of Penn Hills (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in 1989.
Goodwin actually finished fifth because he set the record during the senior men’s competition. He previously had won the junior division with a leap of 26-01.50. Goodwin is a University of Texas signee who also plans to play football this fall.

Buena Vista (Colo.) star Mason Finley set national records of 66-01.50 with the 6-kilogram shot put and 204-03 with the 1.75-kilogram discus.

Snyder flashes power
Brandon Snyder, a DH from Scottsdale Horizon, belted a two-run homer in the second inning and a three-run clout in the fifth to spark Team Arizona to a 10-7 victory over Team Texas during the annual Sunbelt Classic title game Saturday in Norman, Okla.
Texas had beaten Arizona, 14-5, two days earlier and had not lost until the finale. It was only the second loss for the Texans in six Sunbelt championship games. It was the second title for Arizona.
The tournament featured players who are committed to 13 Division I baseball programs.
