University is 2-8 against Fairfax since March of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. A feisty cat fight will be fought as University Wildcats take on Fairfax Lions at 2:30 p.m. University is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
On Monday, University didn't have quite enough to beat Hamilton and fell 7-6. The Wildcats have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Kayla Carpenter was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits (and not a single walk). Carpenter was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, Sharlyn Mendoza was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. That stolen base marked the first that she snagged this season.
Meanwhile, Fairfax was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their tenth straight defeat dating back to last season. They fell 16-12 to Westchester. Even if the Lions couldn't come away with the victory, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their hitters, which had struggled int the games prior.
Allison Vasquez made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Keithsy Segura, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with two stolen bases, four RBI, and one run.
Fairfax's loss dropped their record down to 0-6. As for University, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-2.
Thursday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. University has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .509. However, it's not like Fairfax struggles in that department as they've averaged .434. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
University took their win against Fairfax in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 14-0. Will University repeat their success, or does Fairfax has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
