In what's become a running theme this season, the Starkville Yellowjackets gave their fans yet another huge victory on Saturday. They blew past Callaway 62-36. With Starkville ahead 41-14 at the half, the game was all but over already.
Starkville's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Zariyah Edwards, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 14 rebounds. Edwards hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for three straight games. Jada Gay was another key contributor, scoring 20 points along with two blocks.
Several Chargers players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Shelbie Walker, who scored four points along with nine rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Jernae Ringgold, who scored 13 points along with five rebounds.
Even though they lost, Callaway smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Starkville only pulled down ten offensive rebounds.
The win was the third in a row for Starkville, bringing their record for this year to 17-3. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.0 points per game. As for Callaway, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 15-6.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Starkville and Murrah will face off at 6:00 p.m. on January 19th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Murrah will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Mississippi Rankings (they are ranked 190th, while Starkville is ranked sixth). As for Callaway, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Vicksburg at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
