Football Game Preview: Waverly Wolverines vs. Norwich Purple Tornado

The Waverly Wolverines will square off against the Norwich Purple Tornado at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.

Waverly will roll into the contest after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up 13 points two weeks ago, then bounced right back against Oneonta on Friday. The Wolverines were the clear victors by a 33-8 margin over the Yellowjackets. The Wolverines' offense checked out after the first half but had enough points banked to take the game anyway.

This one was won in the trenches and the lion's share of the credit has to go to Cooper Robinson and Bryce Laforest. Robinson rushed for 119 yards and two scores on only 12 carries while Laforest rushed for 124 yards and one TD on only 11 carries. Those 124 rushing yards gave Laforest a new career-high.

Waverly was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 280 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, a well-balanced attack led Norwich over Susquehanna Valley in every quarter on their way to victory on Saturday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Purple Tornado blew the Sabers out of the water with a 49-6 final score. That looming 49-6 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Purple Tornado yet this season.

Norwich has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 31.0 points over those games. As for Waverly, their record now sits at 8-1.

Waverly beat Norwich 30-18 in their previous matchup back in September. Will the Wolverines repeat their success, or do the Purple Tornado have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
