Exeter Township is 9-1 against Reading since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Eagles will challenge the Red KNights at 4:00 p.m. Exeter Township is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.
Fans were treated to a battle of the Eagles on Friday. Exeter Township never let Cocalico get on the board and left with a 4-0 win.
The team relied heavily on Carter Redding, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played. Chase Youse was another key player, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, Reading hadn't done well against Berks Catholic recently (they were 0-7 in their previous seven matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Red KNights came out on top against the Saints by a score of 13-8. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Red KNights considering their two-run performance the contest before.
Justin DeLaCruz tossed a big game, striking out ten batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off one hit. Those ten strikeouts gave him a new career-high.
On the hitting side, Reading let Samir Diaz Batista and Janser Paredes run wild. Diaz Batista went 4-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base, while Paredes got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Paredes is becoming a predictor of Reading's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-1 (and 1-11 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Frandy Ruiz, who went 2-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Reading always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .553. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Exeter Township has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Reading, their record is now 5-12.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Exeter Township has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.7 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Reading struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Exeter Township's way against Reading in their previous matchup on April 2nd, as Exeter Township made off with a 10-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
