Mt. St. Michael Academy has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will square off against The St. Joseph-by-the-Sea Vikings at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Mt. St. Michael Academy will be strutting in after a win while St. Joseph-by-the-Sea will be coming in after a loss.
Mt. St. Michael Academy was not the first on the board last Saturday, but they got there more often. They snuck past St. Peter's with a 20-14 victory.
Mt. St. Michael Academy's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Nelson Perez, who rushed for 45 yards and a touchdown, and Carl Shaw, who gained 90 total yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, St. Joseph-by-the-Sea fell victim to Moore Catholic's stalwart defense on Saturday and couldn't make it onto the board. They took a serious blow against the Mavericks, falling 36-0. While losing is never fun, St. Joseph-by-the-Sea can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New York football rankings (they are ranked 251st, while Moore Catholic is ranked 53rd).
Mt. St. Michael Academy's win was their sixth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 6-1. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-8 Christ the King and 0-8 Cardinal Spellman (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 36% over those games). As for St. Joseph-by-the-Sea, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-5 record this season.
Things could have been worse for Mt. St. Michael Academy, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 14-0 loss to St. Joseph-by-the-Sea in their previous meeting back in October of 2022. Can Mt. St. Michael Academy avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
