The Cass City Red Hawks will head out to challenge the Millington Cardinals at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Millington will be up against a hot Cass City team: the squad just extended their winning streak to three. Everything went Cass City's way against Athens on Monday as they made off with a 16-7 victory.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Millington faced off against Ubly on Monday. The Cardinals put the hurt on the Bearcats with a sharp 14-2 win. Winning may never get old, but the Cardinals sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.
Ashlyn Bentoski made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one double. That triple was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Morgan Matusik and Lilly Damm did most of the damage at the plate: Matusik went 2-for-5 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs, while Damm got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. That home run marked the first that Matusik has launched this season. Reese Holmes was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.
Millington was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .438. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .304 or higher in four consecutive contests.
Millington pushed their record up to 5-2 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Cass City, their record is now 6-4.
Cass City skirted past Millington 4-3 in their previous matchup back in June of 2023. Will the Red Hawks repeat their success, or do the Cardinals have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
