Hoggard and Ashley are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Vikings will be playing at home against the Screaming Eagle at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
Hoggard fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Laney on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Buccaneers by a score of 5-4. The loss continues a trend for the Vikings in their meetings with the Buccaneers: they've now lost four in a row.
Hoggard saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brandon Bush, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Jonah Harker was another, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run.
Meanwhile, Ashley got themselves on the board against New Hanover on Tuesday, but New Hanover never followed suit. They walked away with a 5-0 win over the Wildcats. The victory continues a trend for the Screaming Eagle in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now won four in a row.
The result came thanks to Cane Mehling's shutout, as he gave up just a hit and racked up six Ks. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Quinn Bentley was incredible, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
Ashley pushed their record up to 17-4 with the win, which was their seventh straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs on average over those games. As for Hoggard, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-15.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Hoggard has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Ashley struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Hoggard came up short against Ashley in their previous matchup back in March, falling 6-3. Will the Vikings have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more baseball content.
