WPIAL AAAA Southeastern recap Oct. 23, 2012
Mt. Lebanon extended the longest winning streak in WPIAL AAAA Southeastern this week by beating Penn Hills, 35-7. This was the team's seventh consecutive win.
Upper St. Clair took down Plum 31-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Steve Mackowick ran for 159 yards in the win.
Mt. Lebanon's dynamic duo of Tyler Roth and Mike Briercheck proved tough for the Indians to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Roth threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns and Briercheck had 126 yards receiving. Troy Apke helped Mt. Lebanon's passing attack out by catching four balls for 100 yards.
Mike Melynk's team's Roth and Apke have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Roth has thrown for 1720 yards this season, while Apke, a 6-foot-2 receiver, has 36 catches for 812 yards. The Panthers' Pete Coughlin leads the league in rushing yards with 373.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Upper St. Clair takes on second place Mt. Lebanon. Upper St. Clair bested the Mustangs last week, while the Blue Devils beat Penn Hills.
There should be lots of points scored when Jim Render's team and Mt. Lebanon face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Panthers comes in having scored 279 this season, while the Blue Devils have scored 273. Upper St. Clair scored 31 points last week as it topped Plum.
Baldwin made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 5,418 from 5,984. The improvement was the result of 24-7 victory over Canon-McMillan last week.
