Baseball Recap: Gillespie Has No Trouble Against Litchfield

Gillespie made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Litchfield, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Miners were the clear victors by a 10-2 margin over the Purple Panthers on Tuesday. The Miners might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three games by seven runs or more this season.

Luke Schuckenbrock made a splash while hitting and pitching. He pitched seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits. Schuckenbrock was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4. He has become a key player for Gillespie: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 0-4 otherwise.

In other batting news, Nathan Haywood and Carson Hailstone did most of the damage at the plate: Haywood scored a run while going 3-for-4, while Hailstone scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-5. Hailstone is becoming a predictor of Gillespie's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 1-4 when he doesn't). Jack Kaylor also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Gillespie kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Litchfield only managed six hits.

Gillespie's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 4-4. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Litchfield, they moved to 9-4 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak.

Looking ahead, Gillespie will challenge Alton at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Litchfield, they will host Jersey at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Panthers will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last.
