The Gonzales Spartans will head out on the road to challenge the North Salinas Vikings at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. North Salinas took a loss in their last matchup and will be looking to turn the tables on Gonzales, who comes in off a win.
Even though Gonzales has not done well against Greenfield recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Gonzales had just enough and edged Greenfield out 50-48. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory Gonzales has posted yet this season.
Meanwhile, North Salinas struggled with assists on Friday (Monte Vista Christian had 11 more) and sadly the final score reflected it. North Salinas took a hard 60-45 fall against Monte Vista Christian. While losing is never fun, North Salinas can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1123rd, while Monte Vista Christian is ranked 544th).
Despite their defeat, North Salinas saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Jesse Mendez, who scored seven points, was perhaps the best of all. Another player making a difference was Angel Lizaola, who scored six points along with six rebounds.
Gonzales' victory bumped their record up to 4-9. As for North Salinas, their loss dropped their record down to 5-9.
Gonzales won a contest that couldn't have been any closer in their previous meeting back in December of 2023, slipping by North Salinas 57-56. Does Gonzales have another victory up their sleeve, or will North Salinas turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
