Sunset and Mountainside are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Apollos will host the Mavericks at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Sunset 2.6, Mountainside 3.5) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Sunset is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Oregon's top teams: Jesuit, who was ranked first at the time (Sunset was ranked third). The Apollos never let the Crusaders get on the board and left with a 3-0 victory on Wednesday. The win was familiar territory for the Apollos, who have now won four matchups in a row.
The result came thanks to Sydney Arnold's shutout, as she gave up just four hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Sunset's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Jordan Pe?a, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Mountainside, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Monday. They came out on top against Beaverton by a score of 4-1 on Wednesday. The Mavericks haven't had any issues with the Beavers recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive win against them.
Jojo Appling tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched.
At the plate, Ainsley Arbow was excellent, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March.
Sunset's victory was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-2. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Mountainside, their victory bumped their record up to 9-7.
Mountainside's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Sunset has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .438. It's a different story for Mountainside, though, as they've only averaged .341. Will they be able to contain Sunset's hitters?
Sunset beat Mountainside 6-3 when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Will the Apollos repeat their success, or do the Mavericks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
