Cathedral has won four straight games at home, while Covenant Christian has won four straight on the road, but those streaks won't matter much on Tuesday. The Fighting Irish will welcome the Warriors at 5:30 p.m. After the two teams made easy work of their previous opponents, one won't be so lucky on Tuesday.
Cathedral had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Indianapolis Bishop Chatard on Friday. The Fighting Irish were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Trojans. Considering the Fighting Irish have won seven games by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Cathedral got a great performance from Landon Hughes as he didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Hughes has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Eli Bennett, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Cameron Koers, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Cathedral was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .522. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last contest, Covenant Christian made sure to put some runs up on the board against Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter on Monday. The Warriors blew past the Raiders 15-3. With that win, the Warriors brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.
Carter Smith and Nolan Guzman made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Smith tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Guzman struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits (and not a single walk). That's the most strikeouts he has posted over his last five matchups. At the plate, Smith went 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs, while Guzman went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Blake Cope was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, one triple, and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Covenant Christian's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 6-7 when he doesn't). Barrett Beyers was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Cathedral is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Covenant Christian, their win bumped their record up to 13-7.
Everything went Cathedral's way against Covenant Christian when the teams last played back in May of 2024, as Cathedral made off with a 9-0 victory. Do the Fighting Irish have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Warriors turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
