Even though the St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish scored an imposing 68 points on Sunday, the St. Ignatius Wildcats still came out on top. St. Ignatius enjoyed a cozy 87-68 win over St. Vincent-St. Mary. Given St. Ignatius' advantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked second, while St. Vincent-St. Mary is ranked 196th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading St. Ignatius to victory were Jack Zapolnik and Quinn Woidke. Zapolnik scored 14 points along with six assists and five rebounds, while Woidke scored 22 points along with five rebounds. The contest was Woidke's eighth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Michael Lamirand, who scored 11 points.
St. Ignatius is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 8-2 record this season. As for St. Vincent-St. Mary, they have fallen quite a ways from their 19-6 record last season and are now at 3-6.
St. Ignatius will be playing in front of their home fans against St. Edward at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. St. Edward knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past nine matches -- so hopefully St. Ignatius likes a good challenge. As for St. Vincent-St. Mary, they will head out on the road to face off against Archbishop Hoban at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Archbishop Hoban will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.
