The St. Marys Bears's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their fourth straight loss. They fell to Centralia 47-41. While losing is never fun, St. Marys can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 77th, while Centralia is ranked tenth).
When it comes to explaining why St. Marys lost, one person who can't be blamed is Hayden Heim. Despite the final result, she scored 18 points along with six rebounds and four blocks. That was a full 43.9% of St. Marys' points, marking the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Isabel Hurla, who scored eight points along with two blocks.
St. Marys has traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-8 record this season. As for Centralia, the victory (which was their 13th in a row) raised their record to 13-1.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. St. Marys will face off against Rock Creek at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. St. Marys is coming into the contest with four straight losses on the road, meaning Rock Creek will have to defend against a team hungry for a win. As for Centralia, they and Valley Heights will face off on February 9th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Valley Heights will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Centralia surely won't give up without a fight.
