The Fleming Island Golden Eagles will face off against the St. Johns Country Day Spartans at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Fleming Island is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Ridgeview just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell 50-43 to the Panthers. While losing is never fun, the Golden Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 222nd, while the Panthers are ranked 68th).
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Gianna Crawford, who went 6 for 15 en route to 17 points and seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Seven Gourdet, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten boards.
Even though they lost, Fleming Island smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in February of 2024.
Meanwhile, St. Johns Country Day entered their tilt with Clay on Tuesday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Blue Devils 60-17. The Spartans have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won six matches by 27 points or more this season.
St. Johns Country Day found their leader in freshman Kendall Proffitt, who went 12 of 23 on her way to 34 points in addition to seven rebounds and five steals. That makes it 16 consecutive games in which Proffitt has scored at least a third of St. Johns Country Day's points. Sophia Mejias was another key player, going 5 for 10 en route to 15 points and five assists.
St. Johns Country Day is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 25.4 points per game. As for Fleming Island, they now have a losing record at 8-9.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Fleming Island has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 25.6 rebounds per game. However, it's not like St. Johns Country Day struggles in that department as they've been averaging 33.1 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
