Softball Recap: Downey Wins Going Away Against Whittier

Downey won against Artesia on Saturday with 12 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Saturday. The Downey Vikings put the hurt on the Whittier Cardinals with a sharp 12-0 win. The match marked the Vikings' most dominant victory of the season so far.

Giana Castillo-Flores made a splash no matter where she played. She kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. What's more, she gave up only zero hits, the fewest she's had since back in April of 2024. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of her three plate appearances with two RBI.

In other batting news, Sophia Hernandez was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. That triple was her first of the season. Juliet Gonzalez was another key player, scoring two runs while going 4-for-4.

Downey was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .483. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .348 or higher in four consecutive contests.

Downey's record is now 6-1. As for Whittier, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 0-5.

Coming up, Downey will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against South El Monte at 3:15 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average, (South El Monte 3.3, Downey 2.9) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Whittier, they didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 1-0 loss against Cabrillo on the 8th.
