The Mission Veterans Memorial Patriots had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 28 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They put the hurt on Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial with a sharp 49-28 victory. The match was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 35-14.
Braden Luedeker was his usual excellent self, rushing for 115 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries, while also throwing for 336 yards and three touchdowns while completing 72.4% of his passes. Luedeker hasn't dropped below three passing touchdowns for five straight games. Mission Veterans Memorial also got help from Abel Lucio who showed off his sure hands for 94 receiving yards.
Despite the loss, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial still got an impressive performance from Miguel Resendiz, who rushed for 129 yards and three touchdowns on only 13 carries. Another player making a difference was Ryan Reyna, who rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown.
Mission Veterans Memorial's win was their third straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 5-4. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 1-8 Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Southwest and 1-8 Hanna (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 33.3% over those games). As for Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 7-2.
Mission Veterans Memorial will look to defend their home field on Friday against Roma at 7:00 p.m. Roma is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune. As for Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial, they will head out on the road to face off against Pioneer at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Pioneer knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past eight games -- so hopefully Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial likes a good challenge.
