Sherman hasn't had much luck against Melissa recently, but that could start to change on Friday. A feisty cat fight will be fought as Sherman Bearcats take on Melissa Cardinals at 6:30 p.m. Sherman has given up an average of 11.8 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
Sherman is headed into Friday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fifth straight game on Tuesday. They lost 20-5 to McKinney North.
Sherman saw eight different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kailiann Causey, who scored a run while going 1-for-2. What's more, Causey posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in April of 2024. Another was Madelyn Whitmire, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
Even though they lost, Sherman was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .308 or higher in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Melissa put another one in the bag on Tuesday to keep their perfect season alive. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Greenville a 15-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Cardinals, who have now won 12 contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Eloisa Maes looked comfortable as she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over four innings pitched. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up a single earned run in eight consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Kennedy Bradley, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, four runs, and one double. Izzy Gonzales was another key player, scoring three runs while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.
Melissa's win was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 15-0. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.2 runs on average over those games. As for Sherman, their loss dropped their record down to 2-11-1.
Friday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Sherman hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .385. However, it's not like Melissa struggles in that department as they've averaged .462. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Sherman suffered a grim 11-0 defeat to Melissa when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can Sherman avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
