The Palmyra Panthers's six-game losing streak dating back to last season came to an end on Thursday. They escaped with a win against Weeping Water by the margin of a single free throw, 35-34. For those curious, yes, that was the biggest win Palmyra has managed all season.
Palmyra's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Gou Kamishita led the charge by scoring 14 points. Those 14 points set a new season-high mark for him. Draven Priel was another key contributor, scoring four points along with five blocks and three steals.
Weeping Water lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Gus Mcgill, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 11 rebounds. Mcgill scored a full 32.4% of Weeping Water's points, the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Nate Tejan, who scored nine points along with six rebounds and four steals.
Even though they lost, Weeping Water were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Palmyra's win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 1-5. As for Weeping Water, they bumped their record down to 2-2 with that defeat, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Palmyra will face off against Falls City at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Nebraska (Falls City is ranked 232nd, while Palmyra is ranked 239th). Weeping Water won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Nebraska Lutheran at 7:30 p.m. on December 15th. Nebraska Lutheran will be coming into the contest with an undefeated record on the line.
