The Poth Pirates will face off against the La Vernia Bears at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Poth will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs last Tuesday, then bounced right back against Nixon-Smiley on Tuesday. The Pirates put the hurt on the Mustangs with a sharp 19-1 victory.
The team relied heavily on Brevyn Brockman, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, six RBI, and three runs. That's the most runs she has posted since back in February. Another player making a difference was Ava Kroll, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one double.
Poth always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .812. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, La Vernia got the win against Long Creek on Friday by a conclusive 14-5.
Addison Lundin made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. Lundin was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with three RBI and one run.
In other batting news, Justice Trujillo and Makayla Soriano did most of the damage at the plate: Trujillo got on base in three of her five plate appearances with three runs, three RBI, and one double, while Soriano went 3-for-6 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Ashlyn West was another key player, going 2-for-5 with three RBI and one run.
Poth's win bumped their record up to 16-4. As for La Vernia, their victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 9-11.
Thursday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Poth has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .557. However, it's not like La Vernia struggles in that department as they've averaged .482. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Poth beat La Vernia 8-5 in their previous meeting back in February. Will the Pirates repeat their success, or do the Bears have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
