5A District 1 recap November 5, 2013
Volcano Vista lost to Cleveland 38-14 last week, the largest margin of any game. Josh Williams was a bright spot for the Hawks, as he threw for 147 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for 98 yards in the loss.
Cibola and Rio Rancho played the most contested game in 5A District 1 this week, with Cibola eventually emerging with a 28-27 victory. Derek Martinez threw for 272 yards and 1 touchdown and ran for 16 yards in the win.
Conner Linson was a key player and the best on defense this week as the Cougars bested the Rams. The 5-foot-11 senior grabbed 2 interceptions and racked up 0 sack.
Martinez was a passing and rushing force as Cibola beat Rio Rancho. Martinez's key target this week was Sam Garcia, who caught 6 passes for 118 yards.
Williams put up the best numbers in passing as Volcano Vista fell to the Storm. Williams' favorite target this week was Connor Anderson, who caught 4 passes for 91 yards.
6-foot-3 quarterback Easton Bruere of Dave Howes' team is the league leader in passing yards this season with 2,077. He has also thrown 25 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is Anderson. The Volcano Vista star has 31 catches for 553 yards.
The most important game in the league this week will be the match up between Chad Wallin's team and Rod Williams' team. The Hawks enters the contest ranked 13th in the state, while the Cougars ranks sixth.
Nieto Jesse of the Cleveland is only 80 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 142 carries Jesse has put up 920 yards this year.
Fans will be thrilled by an exciting game in the secondary when Volcano Vista's Anderson goes up against Cibola's Elijah Winfield.
The league will see a high scoring game when Heath Ridenour's team and Rio Rancho face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Storm comes in having scored 297 this season, while the Rams have scored 258. Cleveland scored 38 points last week as it topped the Hawks.
The Cougars made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 1,224 from 1,469. The advance stemmed from a 28-27 victory over Rio Rancho last week.
