The Spackenkill Spartans will be playing at home against the Mount Academy Eagles at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Spackenkill is not getting complacent, as they presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than the Eagles in New York (the Spartans are ranked 112th, while the Eagles are ranked 230th).
On Saturday, Spackenkill came up short against the Blue Devils and fell 58-48. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Spackenkill has scored all season.
Meanwhile, Mount Academy had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 26.3 points), and they went ahead and made it five on Friday. They managed a 49-44 victory over Dover. Winning is a bit easier when you work as a team to post 12 more assists than your opponent, as Mount Academy did.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mount Academy to victory, but perhaps none more so than Dennis Hofer, who scored 17 points along with eight rebounds and five steals. Hofer has been hot recently, having posted 16 or more points the last three times he's played. Bruce Maendel was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with three steals.
Spackenkill has not been sharp recently as the team's lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 12-3 record this season. As for Mount Academy, they pushed their record up to 12-1 with that victory, which was their sixth straight at home.
Everything came up roses for Spackenkill against the Eagles when the teams last played back in February of 2023 as the team secured a 70-32 victory. With Spackenkill ahead 40-12 at the half, the matchup was all but over already.
