Baseball Recap: Verrado Drops Highest Score of Season Against Tigard

While Verrado didn't have the best season last year (they finished 11-16), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. Everything went their way against the Tigard Tigers on Monday as Verrado made off with a 15-9 victory. The Vipers' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Braxton Bjur made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out 11 batters over four innings while giving up four earned runs off six hits. Those 11 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one RBI.

In other pitching news, Lucas Spitzock looked comfortable as he pitched 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, Verrado got a massive performance out of Colton Zacher, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Those three hits gave Zacher a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Ronal Urquiola, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-4.

Verrado always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .550. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Verrado is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-3-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.4 runs over those games. Tigard's loss dropped their record down to 1-1.

Coming up, Verrado is taking a road trip to face off against Valley Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Valley Christian's pitching crew has only allowed 2.5 runs per game this season, so Verrado's hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Tigard, they will welcome Ida B. Wells at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
