Basketball Recap: Harrison Piles Up the Points Against West Lafayette

There's no place like home for Harrison, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Tuesday. They breezed by the West Lafayette Red Devils to the tune of 51-19 on Thursday. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 26-6.

Harrison's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Aleah Szymanski, who went 6 for 8 on her way to 17 points in addition to five boards and three steals. Those 17 points gave Szymanski a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Ava Ahnert, who posted nine points along with five assists and five rebounds.

Harrison smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in eight consecutive matches.

When it comes to explaining why West Lafayette lost, don't look at Molly Andrew. Despite the final result, she scored 13 points in addition to seven boards and three steals. That was a full 68.4% of West Lafayette's points, marking the sixth time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points. Riley McPherson also deserves some recognition as she scored her first points of the season.

Harrison's victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 7-16. As for West Lafayette, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-16 record this season.

Both are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Harrison will challenge Lafayette Jefferson at 6:00 p.m. on February 7th. Harrison has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for West Lafayette, they will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Lafayette Central Catholic at 7:30 p.m. on November 4th.
