Baseball Recap: Almond-Bancroft Comes Up Short

Almond-Bancroft extended their losing streak to four on Monday, dropping their season record down to 2-4 in the process. They lost 11-5 to the Port Edwards Blackhawks. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since April 23, 2024, but that streak is no more.

As for Port Edwards, their victory was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 4-2. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three contests by six runs or more this season.

For Port Edwards' part, Max Michels and Brynden Beck made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Michels struck out nine batters over 3.1 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. Meanwhile, Beck struck out six batters over 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits (and not a single walk). Michels has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season. At the plate, Michels went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run, while Beck went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Those three RBI gave Michels a new career-high.

In other batting news, Port Edwards let Collin O'Connor and Ayden Schumer run wild. O'Connor got on base in four of his five plate appearances with three runs and one RBI, while Schumer went 2-for-5 with three stolen bases and two RBI. Those three stolen bases gave Schumer a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Vincent Striegel, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.

Coming up, Almond-Bancroft will host Gresham Community at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Wildcats' pitching crew has only allowed 3.2 runs per game this season, so the Eagles' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Port Edwards, they are taking a road trip to face off against Iola-Scandinavia at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
