The Staunton River Golden Eagles will head out on the road to square off against the Tunstall Trojans at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Staunton River is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.3 runs per game this season.
Staunton River's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. Everything went their way against Magna Vista as they made off with an 8-0 win. The Golden Eagles haven't had any issues with the Warriors recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive victory against them.
The result came thanks to Emma Alcorn's shutout, as she gave up just two hits and racked up nine Ks. Those nine strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.
At the plate, Staunton River let Kailynne Keister and Chloe Metric run wild. Keister went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one RBI, while Metric went 2-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI. That triple marked the first that Metric hit this season. Another player making a difference was Kaylee Maxfield, who went 1-for-4 with three RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Tunstall might've scored the first runs on Friday, but it was Franklin County who claimed the real prize. The Trojans fell just short of the Eagles by a score of 7-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Trojans have suffered since May 15, 2024.
Kinslee Cassell was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits (and only one walk). Cassell was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Harper Lovelace was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
This is the second loss in a row for Tunstall and nudges their season record down to 5-2. Even worse, they were so close both times: the losses came by an average of only 1.5 runs. As for Staunton River, their win bumped their record up to 4-2.
Staunton River was able to grind out a solid victory over Tunstall when the teams last played back in May of 2019, winning 5-1. Will the Golden Eagles repeat their success, or do the Trojans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
