The matchup between the Tabb Tigers and the Bruton Panthers on Wednesday hardly resembled the 4-3 effort from their previous meeting. The contest between the pair wasn't particularly close, with Tabb falling 73-58. While losing is never fun, they can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 278th, while Bruton is ranked 78th).
Tabb's loss came despite strong showings from Torrion Haywood and Micah Marbra. Haywood scored 14 points, while Marbra scored 15 points along with nine rebounds. The contest was Haywood's third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was James Mueller, who scored ten points.
Even though they lost, Tabb were working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Bruton got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Khamani Phillips out in front who scored 32 points. Those 32 points set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Johnathan Hopkins, who scored 17 points along with four steals.
Tabb now has a losing record at 2-3. As for Bruton, they pushed their record up to 3-2 with that victory, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Tabb will square off against Smithfield at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Smithfield is coming into the contest hot, having won their last three games. As for Bruton, they will head out on the road to face off against York at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
