Basketball Game Preview: Ridgemont Golden Gophers vs. Elgin Comets

Ridgemont is 2-8 against Elgin since February of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Ridgemont Golden Gophers will look to defend their home court against the Elgin Comets at 7:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Ridgemont is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They took their game on Saturday with ease, bagging a 57-20 victory over Calvary Christian. The matchup was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 38-10.

Ridgemont can attribute much of their success to Laney Elsasser, who posted 14 points, and Kylie Shreve, who earned 14 points. Those 14 points gave Elsasser a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Ruth Eckstein, who put up nine points.

Meanwhile, Elgin had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 25.7 points) and they went ahead and made it four on Saturday. They walked away with a 64-51 win over the Wildcats.

Ridgemont better keep an eye on Maycee Muselin. She was instrumental in Elgin's win, going 11 of 25 on her way to 30 points along with seven boards and six assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Jordan Wall, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine rebounds.

Elgin smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in four consecutive contests.

Elgin is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 54.5 points per game. As for Ridgemont, their victory bumped their record up to 3-6.

Ridgemont was taken down by Elgin 63-24 in their previous matchup back in January of 2024. Thankfully for Ridgemont, Samantha Girton (who almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine assists) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
