Playing on a team filled with all-stars, Cassius Stanley stood out as the best of the best in California in 2019.
The 6-foot-5 forward, known for his spectacular dunks and drives to the basket, added a three-point shot to his game this year and the difference in his game helped elevate Sierra Canyon to the No. 1 ranking in the nation by the MaxPreps computer rankings.
Stanley also helped Sierra Canyon win a CIF Open Division championship with a 76-52 win over Sheldon (Sacramento). He had 20 points in the win, which was the second state title in a row for the Trailblazers.
The CIF Open Division Player of the Year and the Player of the Year by the Los Angeles Daily News, Stanley now adds MaxPreps California Player of the Year to his list of honors.
Video: Cassius Stanley highlightsSee the California state Player of the Year in action. Steven Dyer of Campolindo (27-7) is the state coach of the year. After leading the Cougars to a North Coast Section Division 3 runner-up finish to unbeaten Salesian (Richmond), Dyer's team was placed one division higher for the state playoffs as the No. 2 seed in Northern California.
All the Cougars did was win five straight games, including a 55-40 win over Colony (Ontario) in the Division 2 championship game, to win the school's first state championship.
The MaxPreps California all-state teams include an overall first through sixth teams. There is also a first and second team for each of the five state divisions and one for the NorCal Division 6.
The all-state teams are selected with teams placed in the divisions in which they competed at the sectional level, not in the state tournament.
Besides being the overall MVP, Stanley is also the Division 1 MVP. Following is a look at each of the other divisional MVPs.
Division 2 MVP
Jalen Green, San Joaquin Memorial
The junior is ranked as the top player in the Class of 2020 for good reason. He led San Joaquin Memorial to a Central Section Division 2 championship while averaging 33 points per game.
Division 3 MVP
JT Tan, Rolling Hills Prep (San Pedro)
The Most Valuable Player of the Southern Section Class 3AA division, Tan led Rolling Hills Prep to a section championship. The 6-foot-8 center averaged 17 points, 11 rebounds on the year.
Division 4 MVP
Viktor Rajkovic, Branson (Ross)
The leading scorer for the Bulls, Rajkovic was the Metro Area player of the year by the San Francisco Chronicle after leading Branson to a North Coast Section Division 4 championship. Branson won their section playoff games by an average of 25 points per game.
Division 5 MVP
Kole Riccomini, Mt. Shasta
The brother, and teammate, of the second all-time leading scorer in Northern Section history, Kaden Riccomini, it was Kole who proved to be the sparkplug and leader of the best team in Mt. Shasta history. The Bears tied Redding Christian for a section record 33 wins and Riccomini averaged 17 points while running the offense. Mt. Shasta reached the Division 5 state championship game before falling to Foothill (Bakersfield).
Division 6 MVP
Austin Larson, Redding Christian (Palo Cedro)
Larson set a Northern Section record for points scored in a season with 1,014. He helped lead the Lions to 33-straight wins before falling to Cornerstone Christian (Antioch) in the NorCal Division 6 championship game. Larson was a first team All-Northern Section pick.
