5A Region III District 22 recap Oct. 3, 2012
Alvin's Eric Olszewski recorded the longest rushing play in 5A Region III District 22 this season in his game against Sam Rayburn last week. Olszewski scampered for 97 yards on the play and finished with 93 on the day as his team topped the Texans.
Pearland was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from third to first in the league. The Oilers vanquished Pasadena 63-0 earlier in the week.
Manvel's dynamic duo of Shane McCarley and Carlos Thompson proved tough for Pasadena Memorial to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. McCarley threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns and Thompson had 118 yards receiving. Kyrion Parker helped Manvel's passing attack out by catching seven balls for 107 yards.
John McDowell was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 14 carries, he ran for 226 yards as Alvin bested the Mavericks.
Manvel's McCarley and Thompson have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 5A Region III District 22 in both passing and receiving yards. McCarley has thrown for 1198 yards this season, while Thompson, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 24 catches for 417 yards. Reggie Turner from Pasadena Memorial leads the league in rushing with 605 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Sam Rayburn takes on Pearland. At the moment, Chris Bussey's team is in fourth, while Tony Heath's team is in first.
Dobie moved up to 426 from 546 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. A 37-14 win over South Houston helped the Longhorns improve their standing.
