Even though the Washington Township Senators scored an imposing 57 points on Friday, the Portage Indians still came out on top. Portage slipped by Washington Township 58-57. Winning is a bit easier when you drain six more threes than your opponent, as Portage did.
Leading Portage to victory were Ava Kingery and Evelyn Garza. Kingery scored 13 points along with seven assists and five steals, while Garza scored 17 points along with five rebounds. That's the first time this season that Garza scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Alante Wright, who scored ten points.
When it comes to explaining why Washington Township lost, one person who can't be blamed is Brooklyn Campbell. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds. Those 19 points set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Clair Klinger, who scored eight points along with ten rebounds and seven assists.
Portage's win bumped their record up to 9-7. As for Washington Township, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 9-7.
Portage will head out on the road to face off against Valparaiso at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Washington Township, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Munster at 7:00 p.m. Hopefully Munster focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 on Friday.
