The Southern Wayne Saints waltzed into their contest Friday with two straight wins but they left with three. They snuck past Greene Central with a 38-34 victory.
Southern Wayne got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Azariah Jordan out in front who scored eight points along with six steals. Those six steals set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Nygeria Thompson, who scored 11 points.
Despite the defeat, Greene Central saw an underclassman step up: An'nysha Wooten scored eight points along with 11 rebounds and three blocks. Wooten has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Janiyah Sutton, who scored two points along with seven rebounds and three steals.
Even though they lost, Greene Central were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Southern Wayne only pulled down two offensive rebounds.
Southern Wayne's win bumped their record up to 3-7. As for Greene Central, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-8.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Southern Wayne will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against East Wake at 6:00 p.m. on January 2nd. East Wake is coming into the matchup on a five-game losing streak. Greene Central and SouthWest Edgecombe will face off at 6:00 p.m. on January 3rd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. SouthWest Edgecombe presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Greene Central in North Carolina (SouthWest Edgecombe is ranked 140th, while Greene Central is ranked 395th).
