Football Recap: Martin Gazo Key Part of Team Effort in Red Devils Win

For some reason, the away team has come away with the win the last five times West Lafayette and Hamilton Heights have met, but the home crowd finally got their W on Friday. The Red Devils took down the Huskies 24-8. That's more bragging rights for the Red Devils, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead West Lafayette to victory, but perhaps none more so than Martin Gazo, who rushed for 88 yards and one touchdown on only eight carries. Gazo was even better on defense, forcing one fumble and making 11 total tackles (2.0 for loss). Another signal caller making a difference was Blake Biddle, who threw for 117 yards and one TD.

West Lafayette's defense stepped up as well, laying out Drew Woodruff six times. The heavy lifting was done by Cal Elias and Niko Karlaftis, who racked up four sacks between them. JJ Weida was another major factor on D, picking up a sack and making 12 total tackles.

Hamilton Heights' defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was AJ Flanagan, who rushed for 75 yards and one score, and also picked up 30 receiving yards. The Huskies also got help from Cameron Fleming, who showed off his sure hands for 100 receiving yards.

West Lafayette's victory was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 3-6. As for Hamilton Heights, they now have a losing record of 4-5.

Looking ahead, West Lafayette will head out to square off against Western at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. That game will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Kojo Steffey and Matthew McKitrick. As for Hamilton Heights, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Guerin Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Golden Eagles will aim to continue their four-game streak of scoring more points each contest than the last.
