The Roy Royals were the 55-51 winner over the Woods Cross Wildcats when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. Roy was just a bucket shy of victory on Friday and fell 54-53 to Woods Cross.
Several Royals players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Dahlen Pontius, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and ten rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Colby Frokjer, who scored 18 points along with five rebounds.
Woods Cross' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ben Smith-mecham led the charge by scoring 16 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Smith-mecham has scored all season. Bryson Watson was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
Roy has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-11 record this season. As for Woods Cross, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-15.
Roy will be playing at home against Bountiful at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The timing isn't great for Roy: they have been struggling with three straight losses at home, while Bountiful has snatched up five consecutive wins on the road. As for Woods Cross, they will square off against Northridge at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Northridge knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past nine contests -- so hopefully Woods Cross likes a good challenge.
