After flying high against the Seligman Antelopes last Friday, the Grand Canyon Phantoms came back down to earth. Grand Canyon had to suffer through a rough 73-46 loss at the hands of Williams. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat Grand Canyon has suffered since December 28, 2023.
Grand Canyon's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Xochitl Galvan, who scored 23 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Galvan has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last six times she's played. Another player making a difference was Jaemie Jensen, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 steals.
Grand Canyon struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Williams racked up 19 assists.
Kai Mortensen was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 35 points and 12 rebounds for Williams. The team also got some help courtesy of Braydyn Larimore, who scored 27 points along with five assists and two steals.
Grand Canyon's defeat dropped their record down to 8-12. As for Williams, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a massive bump to their 14-10 record this season.
Grand Canyon and Ash Fork will face off at 4:30 p.m. on January 24th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Arizona (Ash Fork is ranked 270th, while Grand Canyon is ranked 262nd). As for Williams, Williams and Seligman will face off at 5:30 p.m. on January 25th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Seligman is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'.
