Vela is on a three-game streak of home wins, while Miller is on a six-game streak of away wins (dating back to last season): one of those streaks is about to end. The Vela Sabercats will take on the Miller Buccaneers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Vela walked away with it. They blew past Weslaco East 31-9. The score was close at the half, but Vela pulled away in the second half with 21 points.
Jamal Polley was his usual excellent self, rushing for 213 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 7.3 yards per carry. Polley hasn't dropped below two rushing touchdowns for six straight games.
Meanwhile, Miller never let their opponents score on Thursday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Martin 77-0 at home. Given Miller's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 145th, while Martin is ranked 946th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Broderick Taylor, who rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries. Taylor's longest rush was for an incredible 78 yards. Another player making a difference was Nigel Gladd, who rushed for 83 yards and two touchdowns on only six carries.
Their wins bumped Vela to 10-1 and Miller to 11-0.
We should be in store for an exciting game Friday as the pair have no problem gaining yardage. Vela has been on an offensive roll this season, having averaged 377.1 total yards per game. However, it's not like Miller struggles in that department as they've been even better at 553.6 per game. With a pair of commanding offenses duking it out, the defenses are going to have their work cut out for them.
